As I talk with more people at these festivals, I start to believe that the heart-wrenching reality of human trafficking can someday be eradicated. Today is our second day at the Ichthus Music Festival in Wilmore, Kentucky.
Today I was encouraged when I visited the other booths in the
“Global Village” tent at Ichthus Fesitval. The two groups that I talked with both help
combat human trafficking. A non-profit in Kentucky called “Refuge for
Women” help women leave the sex industry through a one-year residential
program. The other group does not fight human trafficking in the
traditional way. The “Got Your Back Movement” helps kids in other
countries get an education by buying uniforms for school-aged children.
As we were conversing, the workers at the booth told me that they have heard of
girls in Kenya wearing their uniforms around year-round, even when school is
not in session. This lets everyone know that these girls are “off
limits.” They are receiving an education and will be able to contribute
to their families’ financial situation in ways other than being sex
slaves.
As I learn more about human trafficking, I realize that it is a
sticky, multi-faceted issue. There is no one way to tackle the
problem. Instead, we need to confront the issue in every way. We
need rescuers, funders, safe house workers, volunteers, counselors, judges, law
enforcement, and educators. We need to work towards women’s rights in
foreign countries. We need to find ways to keep young men’s minds pure by
making pornography less accessible. We need individuals to realize that this
is a current global tragedy that demands action. As awareness is raised,
I believe that God will work through our passion for justice and compassion to
create a force that can rescue men, women, and children from bondage.
